Chatting with a friend today about when we considered a ‘line’ to actually start, we had a sharp difference of opinion. By ‘starting a line’, we both meant when did the dogs you bred become a distinct ‘line’, recognizable as yours. He felt that the breeder shouldn’t take credit for that until the puppies were produced from a bitch that he/she bred and sired by a dog that he/she bred. I, on the other hand, felt that my line started with that first litter I bred that I picked the parents to mate and that I then picked the puppies to present as ‘my’ puppies.
While I can see the merits of both opinions, there are some breeders who just never develop a clear vision of what they want despite many generations of ‘their’ breeding on both sides and then some others have such a clear vision of what they want , that they are able to present that ‘look’ from their very first litter
Would you consider CH Falcon of Heying Teckel ROMO to be part of the Heying-Teckel line? They bred neither his father nor his mother, but is any dog a better example of their ‘line’? Would you consider CH Dunkeldorf Falcon’s Favorite ROMO a typical example of the ‘Dunkeldorf’ line ? Actually, neither parent was bred by the Dunks. Could a dog be more identified and emblematic of Hannelore Heller’s Han-Jo line than CH Han-Jo’s Flaming Flare L ROMO despite the fact that he was from two Bayard parents. Is CH Starbarrack Malachite SW ROMO (pending) less emblematic of Liz and James Heywood’s Starbarack line because he was sired by a Saytar dog? As you can see, IMO, taking advantage of the best available quality is much more important than the breeders of the parents. As long as the resulting puppies develop the desired look, they are just as representative of the Breeder’s ‘line’ as any dog he may breed.
I guess the bottom line is whether the person has a clear vision of what they want to achieve and can translate that vision into puppies they produce and choose to represent them in the show ring .Couple that vision with the talent and consistency to pick out the puppies that encapsulate that look and a line is truly born. If they are able to incorporate dogs other than their own into that vision, does that make the ensuing puppies any less their line? Isn’t the line really more about the phenotype (look) of the puppies than their genotype (pedigree).
What are your thoughts on what point a ‘line’ begins?
