This famous photograph, taken by the late Percy Jones of Manhattan, of a five month old Favorite v Marienlust posing with his paws on the prliminary model of the DCA 50th Annivresary bronze plaque first appeared in November 1946 Popular Dogs and in The Favorite Issue. Joseph Mehrere brought Favorite to photograph to dramatize the future of the DCA plaque with a well-bred puppy to represent the future.
It was a September evening in 1945, not long after VJ Day and the explosion of an atom bomb that changed the course of human affairs. I watched a black and tan Dachshund pup trot across Joe and Maria Mehrer’s living room-a veritable atom bomb of his breed who was destined to help change the course of Dachshund fancy affairs. His name- Favorite v Marienlust.
CH Favorite v Marienlust, winning BV at the International KC under Judge Laurence Alden Horswell, shown by Russell Zimmermann for owners Fred and Rose Heying on March 29/30, 1947. At this point, Favorite had been shown 12 times and had won 12 BVs and six Hound Group Firsts. He would be a very young two years old on April 21, 1947
Like the scientists who throughout the years have labored to master and harness the atom to the purpose of their will, Joe and Maria Mehrer developed years of time , money, thought and study, research, trial and error, heartbreak and disappointment, ingenuity and “know-how” to achieve the triumph of establishing a ‘line’ of outstanding Dachshunds.
March 13, 1949- CH Cedric of Heying-Teckel, shown by Russell Zimmerman for owners Fred and Rose Heying, Judge Norton Parker. Cedric was a Favorite son and his eighth Champion
Following the analogy of the atom bomb, Joe and Maria Mehrer, working in their breeders lab, “put together” all the materials, factors and elements that went into the creation of Favorite v Marienlust. Fred and Rose Heying were the “pilots” who carried the bomb upon the world of purebred dogs and upon Dachshunds in particular. It was an unbeatable combination of superb breeding and superb handling, exploitation and showmanship. Breeder, owner and exhibitor, each in its own way have made an immeasurable contribution to the breed. The Heyings can now call in to the Mehrer Base: “Mission Accomplished” and the Mehrers may relax in the immense satisfaction that their “Operation Favorite” is a complete success and radio back: “Congratulations -well done!”.
