Int’l / Eng / Am CH Dimas Earthstopper

A422591
Red Standard Smooth Dog
Sire: ENG CH Fir’s Cruiser
Dam: Red Glory
Whelped:July 12, 1937
Died: February 1, 1944
Breeder: Mrs. Rhona Huggins
Owners: Ellenbert Kennel, then Anne Smith Wenden’s Rivenrock Kennel

Imported as a three year old from England where he had already had an impressive show career – debuting at nine months of age by going Breed from the puppy class, winning multiple Best in Shows.  In the US, Earthstopper finished quickly with two BOB from the classes and went on to become Ellenbert kennel’s first Best in Show winner.  His American career was cut short when Herbert Bertrand died suddenly and the Ellenbert kennel was dispersed.  Earthstopper’s descendants include MBIS / MBISS CH Falcon of Heying-Teckel. – Tracy Freeling

Herbert Bertrand of Ellenbert Kennel, returning from Germany on the SS Bremen with some new additions.

Despite the Great Depression, Ellen and Bert Bertrand of Greenwich, Connecticut had the means to amass some of the best German imports from the Flottenberg Kennel of GF Muller during the 1930s. Their Ellenbert Kennel dominated the big shows like Westminster and DCA (TDHP’s own ‘poster boy’ CH Feri-Flottenberg was BV Smooth at the first 4 DCAs for the Bertrands). These German imports were in the 15-18 pound range as was the style then.

In 1940, shortly before Mr. Bertrand’s death, they imported a different type of dog who changed the look and style of the American Dachshund even though he was used sparingly. That dog was Eng / Am CH Dimas Earthstopper, a big red dog of over thirty pounds from English and German lines. Since he was such a large dog compared to most of his contemporaries, he was quite controversial. He quickly amassed two all breed BIS, however, and his critics were silenced.

Mr. Bertrand passed away and Earthstopper’s show career came to an abrupt end, but when he moved to the Rivenrock Kennels of Anne Smith Wenden in California, his influence was soon felt in other ways. He was lost shortly after arriving in California and, as a result, he only sired two AKC champions, but his offspring went to influential breeders such as the Shultises who passed the size and scale on to the Heying-Teckel line, to Donia Cline  and to the Hirschmans.

His most successful daughter was CH Rivenrock Dorcas out of Cornhill Cricket, maternal half sister to CH Cornhill Goldie v Dachshafen. When the Shultises got her daughter, Rivenrock Doric and the resulting pups were used in the Gera and the Heying-Teckel bloodlines. The course was then set for a larger, more robust Dachshund with that big front.

CH Black Jack v Bergman, an Earthstopper grandson, bred by the Hirschmans and owned by Ray and Gene Shultis.

Ed and Grace Hirschman, both notable Dachshund judges and breeders, acquired a litter sister to Dorcas, Rivenrock Dulcie. Bred to CH Favorite v Marienlust, Dulcie produced several specials and the Top Producer, CH Lucifer von Bergman.  Ray and Gene Shultis bought a son, CH Black Jack v Bergman, for their breeding program.  As a result, he shows up twice behind CH Falcon of Heying-Teckel, arguably the most influential sire of the last sixty years here in the US.

CH Rivenrock Teak, bred by Rivenrock, owned by Donia Cline’s daughter, Nancy Oberg

Another who recognized the virtues of Earthstopper was Donia Cline, proprietor of the Crespi Kennel and an influential judge in her own right.  She acquired CH Rivenrock Tamale and CH Rivenrock Teak, two bitches going back to Earthstopper.  They were successful both in the show ring and the whelping box.

Once these trail blazing breeders and judges opted for a larger, more robust style of Dachshund, there was no turning back.  Since 1940 or so, the twenty five plus pound Dachshund has been successful and accepted in the American show ring. These influential breeders and judges who chose this outline and structure as their preferred type set the pattern for what was to come.  Soon the wires and then the longs followed suit in size and outline. It is amazing how one dog who only sired two champions could have such a profound effect on a whole breed!
