In the early 1930’s, Howard Eric requested that Anna Gargett of Teckelhof Kennel in Detroit purchase a Longhaired Dachshund of superior quality to finish his US Championship. Mrs. Gargett, of German extraction, returned from her next visit to Germany with Kobold vom Fuchsenstein, who attained his championship in July of 1936. Besides being one of the first longhaired champion, he also was a significant influence on this burgeoning variety and was behind most of the early DCA winners.
Bred to CH Gisela v Teckelhof, a longhaired daughter of the Westminster Group winning smooth, CH Fax v Teckelhof, Kobold produced two champions for Mr. Eric’s Riverbank Kennels. They were CH Robin of Riverbank, three times DCA Best of Variety (1941, 1942 and 1943) and CH Tommy Tucker of Riverbank, who was one of the foundation dogs for the very successful Gipsy Barn Kennel of Mrs. Max Zabel of Chicago.
Bred to a Kobold granddaughter, CH Gretchen v d Waldhuette, Tommy produced CH Antonio of Gipsy Barn, the first longhaired BIS winner. Antonio was a huge influence on the West Coast longhairsed of the Chedas’s Marin Kennels as well as his owner Charlotte Sibley’s Forever Kennels. Bred to a half sister, Tianah v Teckelhof, Tommy produced CH Tytucker of Gipsy Barn, DCA 1953 Best of Variety winner, and from another Kobold daughter, Clarissa of Riverbank, he produced CH Zarky of Gipsy Barn, DCA 1945 Best of Variety winner. While not producing to the extent that his brother Tommy did, Robin was the grandsire of CH Mark Anthony of Northmont, DCA 1947 Best of Variety.
Kobold was also bred to CH Kissel v Fels-Berg, a German import owned by Maude Daniels Smith, and produced CH Koboldina v Dachshafen, DCA 1939 Best of Variety. Acquired by Mrs. von Nidda, Koboldina, bred to a Primrose Patch English import, produced CH Vicki vd Nidda, 1944 DCA Best of Variety who, in turn, bred to another Primrose Patch import, produced CH Hussar vd Nidda, DCA Best of Variety in 1949 and 1952.
CH Josephine of Knocknagree, DCA 1951 Best if Variety, also descended from Kobold through a couple of crosses. From 1939 to 1953, Kobold’s descendants won Best of Variety at DCA eleven times!!
Through the vd Nidda, Bayard, Pegremos, Knocknagree and Marin bloodlines, Kobold’s influence is behind all the major lines being shown in the US from coast to coast. The fortuitous part was the importation of the Primrose Patch dogs and Mrs. Hill’s promotion of the German bred CH William de Sangpur, all of which occurred roughly at the same time that Kobold was in his prime. The co-mingling of these three strains produced the modern American longhaired (after Mary Howell made use of some judicious long/smooth crosses).
Anna Gargett must have felt very satisfied that Kobold was such a rousing success for the longhaired variety!
