CH B’s Javelin de Bayard ROMO and His Worth as a Producer

CH B’s Javelin de Bayard L ROMO

When I got started in Dachshunds, I knew little about the Dachshunds or handlers that were active in the breed back in 1976, but I soon began my research and discovered the Top Producers that were producing the type that I wanted to be showing in the Show Ring in the future. When I got started in Longhairs, I wanted the best that were available to breed to and, in my opinion, CH Han-Jo’s Ulyssis L ROMO was the best there was in the Show Ring then. I loved that dog and since Hannelore was showing my Smooth Special occasionally, I spent most of my time helping her and her Show String and getting to know the great ones that Hannelore had in her Kennel. As I said earlier, I loved Ulyssis and thought he was a great one and so asked Hannelore WHY he was so good. She told me that his sire, CH B’s Javelin de Bayard ROMO, was where most of Ully’s qualities came from as he was, in her opinion, the best Longhair that she had ever gone over. He had the best shoulders, the best angulation, lots of forechast, the long arched neck and the body that the Longhair needed to become the best Dachshund Variety in the USA. She said that his rear was not his fortune as his hocks were a little long and that could need help, but never did I hear anyone say that his topline was too bad to be shown. I carried him in and out of the Heller’s  a lot of times during the late ’70s and ’80s and saw him standing and moving and again never faulted him for a bad topline at all.

CH Han-Jo’s Ulyssis L ROMO

Remember, CH B’s Javelin de Bayard ROMO was only shown for two years and he was highly ranked (#3 in ’72 and #3 in ’73) and was a multiple All Breed BIS winner and soon turned into a Great Producer that truly changed the look of Standard Longhair Dachshunds.  Hannelore herself started off with Java as a Special, but soon had the #1 Longhairs in ’74, ’75,’76, and’77.  Javelin’s son, CH Han-Jo’s Ulyssis L ROMO, was the three time #1 in ’75 through ’77. Looking back at those Top Ten lists, there are many Dachshunds who were used a lot at stud, but which dog from back then really made a mark in the Standard Longhair Dachshund and still is used as a benchmark of what we want our current Dachshunds to look like. To me, anyway, Javelin is at the top of the list in producing that Dachshund style that we wanted along with a few others that, in my mind, show what I liked back then and still like today. The dogs that I liked include CH Han-Jo’s Flaming Flare L ROMO, CH Robert de Bayard ROMO, CH Bayard le Souvenir ROMO, CH Bayard le Cardinal ROMX and CH Pegremos Paragon ROM and all are considered dogs who changed the way the Standard Longhair Dachshund looked. In looking at old pictures, remember that the way Dachshunds get stacked and the way the profile is shown can change, but, again, these dogs made the changes that ththe longhairs had to have to become the Variety that was the best one in the Show Ring. Looking at Java’s picture, his topline never bothered me at all and he himself produced great toplines in his offspring that carried on to the new generations that came after them.

CH Robert de Bayard L ROMO

In discussing CH B’s Javelin de Bayard ROMO, I will discuss his parents and his offspring and the differences that came down through Java himself. He was sired by CH Bayard le Franchot who went back to CH Bayard le Souvenir ROMO and CH Robert de Bayard ROMO who both were sired by the great CH Bayard le Tartare ROMX and he was out of CH Robdachs Tambourine who went back twice to CH Covara’s Tabasco ROMO and had the much needed Smooth/Long cross from California. It was a great pedigree that Java used to make the Longhair Dachshund better in the coming years. CH B’s Javelin de Bayard ROMO career started at the 1971 DCA National, held in California, where Mrs. Dorothy Picket awarded Java, from the puppy class, WD, BW and BV. That was his start and it soon led him to be Hannelore Heller’s first heavily campaigned Longhair Dachshund and a multiple BIS and Specialty winner and I, for one, never heard his topline questioned at all.

CH Han-Jo’s Zsa-Zsa L ROMO

As a sire, Javelin produced  such greats as CH l’Oreste von Maradach ROM (who produced one of my favorites Ch RGM’s Chieftain), CH Bayard l’Oriane ROM, CH Han-Jo’s Ulyssis L ROMO (who produced among many others CH Timbar’s Hedley Lamar L ROMX), CH Hannelore de Bayard who was one of Mary Howell’s great producers, CH Han-Jo’s Zsa-Zsa L ROMO (Nancy Lockhart of Sirius Dachsunds foundation bitch), CH Karlew’s Princess of Birkdell ROMX, CH Karlew’s Zachariot (Danny Burke’s first Special), CH Rose Farms Jasmine of Boondox (dam of Group Winner, CH Bradauch Simon v Boondox L), CH Rose Farms Boondox Spritzkof (Andrea Spritzer’s first Dachshund and Special), CH Rose Farms Zesabel of Boondox ROMO(Group Winner herself and ’80 DCA WB and BW winner who produced 5 DCA winners herself), CH Boondox Beggar’s Banquet L (DCA Weekend Winner himself), CH Rose Farms Delilah v Boondox ROMO (who produced CH Rose Farms Xavier, All Breed BIS winner ,  and CH Rose Farms Lady of the Night ROMX), CH Rose Farms Dudley v Boondox L ROM (Group winning Special and a Top Producer himself), CH Rose Farms Dolly v Boondox L (’84 DCA BOSV winner and top Special too), CH Pramada’s J Abercrombie ROMX, CH Rose Farms Honey v Boonodox L ROMX (dam of CH Boondox Bradauch Kaos L  ’88 DCA BOSV winner and dam of CH Boondox Jumping Jack Flash L who was a big force in Australia) and CH Rose Farms Hannelore Boondox ROMX (’84 WB and BW at DCA as well as being the dam of Dual CH Boondox Chaps L ROMX, two times DCA BV winner in ’92 and ’93). These are a few of the 61 AKC champions that Javelin sired and the quality was there in my opinion.

Javelin winning at DCA

Remember, as I have said, toplines can be fixed with one breeding and can be changed very easily if they show up, but I, as someone who does go to the DCA National, does not remember a dog with a bad topline winning the major awards (especially BV from the puppy class!!) there. In looking at Javelin ROMO’s offspring, I also do not remember a lot of bad toplines there, either. Have we passed the point where a little dip in the back means not to breed to it? I hope so because that would mean that I would still be breeding to that Great Producer who some people said had a bad, arched topline, but who produced all those great Dachshunds (WITHOUT bad toplines) who won so much and produced even better than they were themselves. If you notice, I always bred to the dogs that were PRODUCERS that produced healthy great looking and moving Dachshunds and certainly never judged them on a picture no matter what it looked like. I loved when other people made the mistake of judging dogs on their own and forgot how easy those things they don’t like can be fixed in one breeding. In other words, judge these Dachshunds for many things and appreciate their type and conformation and movement, but not what you infer from their pictures. When I look at dogs,I look at that forechest and shoulder angulation and neckset as that is what mine ALWAYS had to have. I want up-headed and I want them to look like they own the ground they are standing on. I let other breeders look at faults and throw out the best producers, while I use them if they are what I need. Remember, my first rule is NEVER lose the progress you have made aleady, but always be on the lookout for things that you need to add to your bloodline.

Javelin

As someone who did use CH B’s Javelin de Bayard L ROMO several times to get his much needed structure in their line, he did my line a great service and I always liked him as a Show Dog AND a Top Producer. Everyone can fault his pictures, I guess, but you do have to show what the dog produces and, trust me, he never let me down in the whelping box.
