CH Albion’s Own Penelope and Her Champion Offspring
This is an article that Harry Sharpe wrote on behalf of his most famous dog, CH Albion’s Own Penelope. She was a GREAT producer and a nice one to have in the kennel!
We lost CH Albion’s Own Penelope in November 1958, but what she gave the Dachshund breed will be long remembered. She was whelped on May 8, 1944 and lived to last November of 1958, passing away at the age of fourteen and a half years old. She maintained a great shape with a topline which was the envy of many younger dogs. She was a large bitch, weighing twenty seven pounds in her prime, but never showed any signs of coarseness. Dr. Herbert Sanborn, seeing her for the first time, said “She has elegance and majesty.” This was at her first show in St. Louis in 1945. The next day, she was Winners Bitch under the late Sidney Twining at that St Louis Specialty. The next day at the Mississippi Valley All Breed Show, she went Best In Show under three different judges. [Ed note: Mr. Sharpe is saying Penelope showed to three different judges for BV, Group 1 and BIS.]
Penelope was bred by the late Mr. Charles E. Holden of the Albion Kennel, being sired by Alsvin v Isartal, who was owned by Dr Herbert Sanborn, x Amber of Badger Hill who originally came from the Sharpe’s. Alsvin was closely line bred to Teck v Falltor who was imported from Germany by Mr. Hubert Johnson of Chicago, IL.
From her sire, Alsvin v Isartal, she carried long-haired genes. Bred back to him, she produced an excellent long-haired male, CH Badger Hill Mr Chips, who took five of his points at Madison Square Garden.
Mated to CH White Gables Scaramouche, she produced three champions–Karen, Kandi and Echo–in one litter. Four champions resulted from one mating to CH Badger Hill New Deal (a great grandson), namely Zava and Zaki who are in our kennel, Zombo owned by the Gary Gerbers of Gary, Indiana and Zula, owned by the Paul Konrads of Kansas City, MO. Another mating to New Deal produced CH Vixen, owned by Mrs. Hewlett of Columbus, OH.
A mating to Badger Hill Benny resulted in a male champion, CH Badger Hill Perk, owned by Mrs. Mike Schultz of Neenah, WI. Penelope and Jerry of Badger Hill produced CH Cricket of Badger Hill, owned by Jerry Rigden of Wadsworth, OH. CH Badger Hill Lady was the result of a mating to Andy of Badger Hill and CH Argo of Badger Hill was the result of a mating to CH Leutnant v Marienlust. Many of Penelope’s sons and daughters preceded her in death.
Great dogs, not directly from her, but carrying her bloodlines, are CH Badger Hill Nobby and New Deal, CH Azavic’s Elegant Deal, CH Badger Hill Boots, a top winning Longhair CH Guyman’s Long Deal, a BIS Smooth CH Kleetal’s Ingulf and many others. These dogs have won everything from Best of Variety to All Breed Bests In Show. These dogs and the dogs directly from her are producing top dogs in their turn. The true worth of a dog is what it can produce.
The foundation of any good kennel lies in its bitches. So let us not underestimate the female of the species. Let us take our hats off to them.
Written by Harry Sharpe for the September 1959 Twentieth Anniversary Issue of “The American Dachshund”.
