Standard Smooths from Rose Farm

CH Venture of Hardway ROMX shown by Dee Hutchinson – 1959

Standard Smooth Dachshunds were the first variety to be owned and campaigned by Nancy Onthank and later her daughter, Dorothy (Dee) Onthank Hutchinson. Rose Farm’s first big winner was CH Venture of Hardway ROMX who was a top Special and was the DCA Best of Variety for 1957 and 1958 and who became a great producer of Champions for the kennel. Venture, shown by Frank and Dorothy Hardy of Pennsylvania for the Onthanks of Connecticut, was sired by CH Hardway Welcome Stranger and out of CH Red Velvet of Fre-Delsa.

The  next special was CH Herthwood’s Mark of Rose Farm, a Venture son out of Herthwood’s Maid Marian, a Marienlust-bred bitch, and Mark also was a big winner on the East Coast, shown again by Frank and Dorothy Hardy  for Mrs. Onthank. He won a lot of Specialties around the area, was a BIS winner in all three of the countries that he gained his championship in and won many Group Ones for the Rose Farm Kennel.

At this point, Mrs. Onthank basically retired from the dog game while Dee took over the kennel and decided to make some changes. She started looking for a new dog, a B&T one, who would change the look of the dogs in her kennel, giving her more front and a bigger forechest and having the shoulders set further back on the body. This new look was started by CH None Such Sebastian, bred by Bobby Fowler, who sired CH Rose Farm’s Impatiens who when bred to Lionel, then produced CH Rose Farm’s Choo Choo, CH Rose Farms Good Lovin’ and their brother, CH Rose Farm’s Lovin’s Brother. Dee also purchased CH Moffet’s Thoma (CH Cook’s Home Brew ROMX ex CH Moffets Gayla ROMX) from the Moffetts and who, unfortunately, never  sired anything, but then Dee acquired CH Karlstadt’s Lionel ROMX, the recent DCA winner of 1975 who did make a huge mark on her kennel and sired all the Smooths and a few Wires at the kennel before being sold to the Martuccis during  his later years. In my experience, Lionel, or Hi-Li, really made a difference in the Smooth outline of the Rose Farm dogs.

One other change is that the dogs became named Rose Farm’s XXXX instead of XXXX of Rose Farm. That change showed us how we knew that Dee had bred that dog herself.
