Miniature Longhairs from Rose Farm
The second variety owned and shown by Mrs. Nancy Onthank and Dee Onthank Hutchinson was the Miniature Longhaired. The first important one was CH Mighty Fine v Walder who Mrs. Onthank purchased in England on a day Mighty Fine did not do well in the show ring and finished third in a class of three, but Mrs. Onthank, who was judging another variety of Dachshunds, offered to buy him and bring him to the USA where he became a nice producer for her kennel. He was finished by Frank and Dorothy Hardy who showed him to some nice wins in the early ’60’s.
The second important one was the B&T miniature, CH Minutist Goliath , shown by Dee Hutchinson. He also was a UK import and had a successful career in the USA show rings.
CH Minutist Utopia, by English CH Minutist Mikado ex Minutist Elegance, was also a UK import.
This one is not listed in the pedigree areas and I would love to know this one’s real name as it evidently is not Rose Farm’s Little Bit ML.
RIP was sired by CH Patchwork Hill Calliope and he was out of Amy of Low, a Goliath daughter and Mighty Fine granddaughter.
CH Graedon Pretty Woman ROM was an import from Australia which got Dee excited about the Variety again. Pretty Woman was from Julie Ireland’s Graedon Kennel and sired by Australian CH Alvar of Caprera out of Australian CH Talberg Lady in Red. She had a nice run finishing her Championship in the USA. She became a top producer (ROM).
Dragonora had the same dam as Pretty Woman and was sired by English CH Graedon Dragon Quest. She became the dam of many Wagsmore Dachshunds and an ROMX.
CH Rose Farm’s Palomino ML ROM was sired by a Pretty Woman half-brother, Rose Farm’s Dragon Quest, who shared the same dam and who was bred to a Pretty Woman daughter, CH Rose Farm’s Smurfette ML. He was a nice producer and made many new Champions for Rose Farm and Wagsmore. One of his longhair daughters was just WB at the 2014 DCA, held in Sacramento, California.
Red Rum became a nice sire for Valerie Diker and produced several Champions.
These are all variations on the Rose Farm theme, co-bred with Nancy Prouty, and are the results of all these years of ML breeding and they equal success for the next generation of Miniature Longhairs.
The Am Can Jap CH PHL’s Aeneas of Love Call Seven JP ROMO and Rose Farm’s Paisley ROMX cross was an outstanding one and produced many top winners in the Eastern area of the USA. Richard, as the sire was called, was a Japanese import, but he was out of US exports to Japan. He was shown to Guy Jeavons who purchased him and brought him back to the USA where he was then purchased by Valerie Diker. Handler Mark Desrosiers showed Richard for a couple of years. The dam, Rose Farm’s Paisley ML ROMX, produced all these nice dogs.
In looking at these dogs, it is amazing how Dee kept her type improving from the ’60’s until now. She did have a gift as to what needs improving in each generation and she made sure the right dogs were bred to and the changes were, indeed, made. She was a great loss to the Dachshund breed and is still missed by those of us who remember her and her ability to change a Variety into a better shape than it was before.
