Harry Howell
Mary Howell’s husband, Harry, was a true Cockney as he was born in London within the sound of Bow’s bells. He was a very successful CPA and lawyer in Washington, DC after the move to Virginia. Harry spoke five languages but did not see that as remarkable as his father spoke twelve. His entire family came to New England before WWII. He was the head of United Nations Relief and Rehabilitations world wide after the end of WWII and that is where he and Mary met.
Mary went all around the world with Harry as his secretary ending up in NYC. Neither of them liked living in the city, however, so they moved to Falls Church, VA where Harry bought a farm house built in 1745. They added some of the houses around them so that eventually the estate had 5 houses and covered over 11 acres, land which “buffered” them from the surrounding neighbors. Luckily, the house was on the historic registry so that after Mary’s death in 1984, the bank (her executor) could not have it razed or sell the land for townhouse development. The house still stands and is now surrounded by large homes with no land at all!
Harry loved the dogs, but was not a fan of dog shows or most dog people. He played piano, both from music and by ear. At Christmas parties, he would play by the hour. It also had the added benefit of keeping him from having to make conversation with people. I found him to be a charming, courtly, entertaining conversationalist. He was also an avid vegetable gardener and could be found working in his garden both at the crack of dawn and late at night during spring and summer. Mary, on the other hand, loved flower gardens and the place was a riot of well thought out constantly blooming flower beds.
Harry gave Mary her first longhaired, CH Karl Hans von Ritter Bayard. Ben finished him, winning several group placings along the way. After earning his American championship, Hans was then allowed into the AKC stud books.
I remember Mary’s mother, Meta, looking around at a litter of pups one day and remarking “If I’d known you wanted a dog this badly, I’d have gotten you one!” Meta was a charming lady, an accomplished water color artist and great cook. She came to live with Mary after her husband died, staying there until her own death in the early 70s.
