Firsts for Standard Smooths
Standard smooths dominated the breed ring for many decades. Until the late 1930s, every AKC conformation champion Dachshund had been a standard smooth.
The first longhaired and wirehaired Dachshunds were not even registered with AKC until 1930. Prior to 1943, the three coat varieties competed for Best Dachshund to determine which went on to compete in the Hound Group at Westminster. Given this history, standard smooths were the first Dachshunds to win many of the first benchmark achievements in the breed ring.
