Columbine Dachshund Club proudly announces a first for the club, OTCH Tani Jodeen UDT. More importantly, she is the first smooth Dachshund in the USA to win the title! Tani (pronounced “Tawny”) is owned by Vicki Bennett and trained by Jerry Bennett. She earned her OTCH over 14 months time with eight 1st-places and five 2nd-places in open, ten 1st-places and six 2nd-places in utility, five high in trials and three high combined in trials. She completed her title at the age of seven on November 17, 1985. Along with her accomplishments in obedience, Tani Jodeen also has earned 21 1/2 points towards her field championship. We’re all very proud of this dynamite red smooth Dachshund in Columbine country! – Monica Canestrini, Columbine Dachshund Club
Tani qualified in each of her obedience classes to the invitational Regional Dog Obedience Championship. In between showing, she went through three heat cycles and had a litter of pups after finishing novice. We trained with Sharon Fulkerson in novice, soon after, I put a tracking degree on her. We were trained in tracking by Betty Mae Regan. By earning a tracking degree after novice, I had so much confidence in her ability because it was so much fun for her. Then I started training in open with trainer Vivian Nunnally.
I worked with her almost every day and then played after each session. We played retrieving the ball or throwing a rag frisbee. As we were earning our OTCH degree, we had a setback when a Newfoundland jumped the ring and chased Tani while doing a go-out in utility. We had to work very hard to get her over the fear because she hesitated on go-outs after that incident.
Having a Dachshund is so neat because most people think Dachshunds aren’t obedience dogs, but they can be, which fools a lot of people. We started working in utility with Nancy Johnson, Sue Schwartz and Bert Pelletier. Everything Tani did was at a fast pace, like a rocket ship, because it was so much fun for her. I think that was from letting her play as much as I trained her. I trained with a lot of different trainers and learned something good from all of them. I never was a cookie trainer but a toy trainer with a lot of praise. I think that’s why she was so happy to work for me. Practice matches helped a lot to get her ready for shows. In the past 40 years, I have never had any other dog but a Dachshund. We have had ten so far, and my wife won’t have any other dog besides a female smooth Dachshund. I’m happy with that. The majority were red smooths and two black and tan smooths. We’ve never had a dumb Dachshund.
