Congratulations!
I updated the page for CH GrandGables Wee Mr. Red Thorn ROMX and he now has 25 confirmed American Champions. This is enough to put him tied for Number Two on the All Time Top Producing Miniature Smooth Sires List! Congratulations to his owners, Guy Jeavons and Mark Houston-McMillan!! ‘
I also posted a couple of interesting articles by Rick Beauchamp on the TDHP Faceboook page. I hope you enjoy them when you have the time to read them.
When Does Your ‘Line’ Begin ?
Chatting with a friend today about when we considered a ‘line’ to actually start, we had a sharp difference of opinion. By ‘starting a line’, we both meant when did the dogs you bred become a distinct ‘line’, recognizable as yours. He felt that the breeder shouldn’t take credit for that until the puppies were produced from a bitch that he/she bred and sired by a dog that he/she bred. I, on the other hand, felt that my line started with that first litter I bred that I picked the parents to mate and that I then picked the puppies to present as ‘my’ puppies.
While I can see the merits of both opinions, there are some breeders who just never develop a clear vision of what they want despite many generations of ‘their’ breeding on both sides and then some others have such a clear vision of what they want , that they are able to present that ‘look’ from their very first litter
Would you consider CH Falcon of Heying Teckel ROMO to be part of the Heying-Teckel line? They bred neither his father nor his mother, but is any dog a better example of their ‘line’? Would you consider CH Dunkeldorf Falcon’s Favorite ROMO a typical example of the ‘Dunkeldorf’ line ? Actually, neither parent was bred by the Dunks. Could a dog be more identified and emblematic of Hannelore Heller’s Han-Jo line than CH Han-Jo’s Flaming Flare L ROMO despite the fact that he was from two Bayard parents. Is CH Starbarrack Malachite SW ROMO (pending) less emblematic of Liz and James Heywood’s Starbarack line because he was sired by a Saytar dog? As you can see, IMO, taking advantage of the best available quality is much more important than the breeders of the parents. As long as the resulting puppies develop the desired look, they are just as representative of the Breeder’s ‘line’ as any dog he may breed.
I guess the bottom line is whether the person has a clear vision of what they want to achieve and can translate that vision into puppies they produce and choose to represent them in the show ring .Couple that vision with the talent and consistency to pick out the puppies that encapsulate that look and a line is truly born. If they are able to incorporate dogs other than their own into that vision, does that make the ensuing puppies any less their line? Isn’t the line really more about the phenotype (look) of the puppies than their genotype (pedigree).
What are your thoughts on what point a ‘line’ begins?
We can discuss it here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/334643526580701/
Remembering the Past
Many Native American peoples had two words to describe the dead. One word for those who had died- but still had someone living who remembered them, and another word for those who have died and no living person was left who remembered them.
Our goal at TDHP is to keep all the Dachshund Greats-both dogs and people- in the first category!
Setting Type
There are those of us, foolish purists that we are, who see a given breed one way and one way only. We struggle to reproduce that ideal as consistently as possible. It goes without saying this is a very old fashioned and very arduous way of breeding dogs. But then, all the good lines I have ever known have been developed in this old fashioned way – through hard work, persistence and an unswerving dedication to a clearly envisioned goal.

Food For Thought (and Discussion)
What great timing!
We just got permission to publish this instructive contribution right before DCA!!
http://wp.me/P20hQd-44F
It is titled “Developing an Eye for Type in Dachshunds’ and, IMO, contains a well thought out progression and philosophy on how to assess our Breed. TDHP would welcome your thoughts on this article at our Facebook Group page at

Big Achievement for a Little Dog!
Congratulations to Ch. Glenavan Acclaim ML for his upgrade to ROMO (Pending)!
Upgrade to a deserving sire!
As I was entering the pictures that John Hart and Charles Baris of Barhar Dachshunds so generously sent in, I managed to find more Qualitative Qualifiers for CH Kemper Dachs Bad Habits ROMX so that I am able to apply for his ROMO. It is gratifying to be able to help recognize the achievements of these great dogs who are no longer here! So, congratulations to Timmy, CH Kemper Dachs Bad Habits ROMO (Pending)!
Congratulations!
I just added a couple of bitches to their respective Top Producers’ page . Elaine Hanson’s CH Pinewood’s Pretty Penny MS ROM (Pending) was added to the Miniature Smooth Dam’s page and Anne and Catherine Carson’s CH Twelfth Night Glory Be ROMO was added to the Standard longhaird Dam’s page. Check them out!
