Destiny, with an able assist from Favorite, has decreed that he should be the outstanding Dachshund sire through all the years, past and present. — Grayce Greenburg writing in 20th Anniversary issue of The American Dachshund.
Favorite’s first show as the February 1946 Golden Gate Dachshund Club Specialty. From and entry of 112, judge Edward Hirschman awarded BOB to the nine month old Favorite over specials including CH White Gables Basil, CH Ebony Eric v. d. Daniels and CH Uhlan v Cellarius. During his short show career, he won two all-breed Best in Shows (Glendale KC with 907 entries and Midcontinent KC with 501 entries), 8 BISSs, 10 specialty BOVs, 25 all-breed BOVs, and 9 Hound Group firsts. He was BOV at Westminster KC in 1947 over an entry of 100, and BOV at Chicago International KC over an entry of 109. While pursuing his Canadian championship, Favorite also won three group firsts there.
In addition to the AKC Champions listed below, Favorite also sired Canadian CH Trooper of Heying-Teckel, Canadian CH Elena of Gera, Cuban CH Larry of Heying-Teckel, Canadian CH Cedarglade Toastmaster, Canadian CH Dachsheim’s Black Berry, Canadian CH Dachsheim’s Tar Baby, and Canadian CH Rosolona’s Cadet.
The following quote is from George Spradling’s article in the April 1953 issue of The American Dachshund (commonly referred to as “the Favorite issue”). Favorite had then sired fifty-three champions.
“Favorite’s children are of a type and conformation which has for years been considered the most desirable by a large majority of breeders. He has produced children of this structure and type more abundantly and consistently than any other stud ever known in the breed. In short, he is the greatest sire the breed has ever known. He comes from the Marienlust strain, which in turn is primarily based on Luitpoldsheim bloodlines.
A study of his pedigree does not indicate his prepotency as a breeder. There are perhaps a hundred studs of the same family with equal or even better siring potential on paper. That is to say, the chances for homozygosity in characteristics are increased in intensely inbred dogs, and Favorite is not such an animal. But in him there is a fixture of genes determining structure and type that is bestowed upon few studs; literally, one in many thousands. In other words, he is a mutant for these characteristics. We always look for a mutant but seldom find one. We know little about them.
Favorite is, indeed, a favorite of nature. She bestowed upon him a priceless gift. Proof of his mutancy is found in an analysis of the pedigrees of the bitches out of which he has produced his champion progeny, and is even more evident to one who has been fortunate enough to have seen a goodly number of the dams, thus being able to observe the differences in type and quality among them; a disparity not evident in the overwhelming majority of his puppies, regardless of the dam. Another mutant for similar conformation and type may not come along in any of our lifetimes. How then may Favorite’s qualities be preserved by breeders desiring to do so? Simply by applying sound genetical breeding practices.
‘Like does not beget like’ except in the broad sense that any male and bitch pure-bred Dachshund will produce pure-bred Dachshunds recognizable as such. Like genes do produce like genes, so the problem is to get as many like genes in the prospective parents as possible. In other words, the homozygosity of the desired characters must be increased. This may be done only by inbreeding. No breed or strain within a breed has been established except through inbreeding. It is a safe breeding procedure. Danger (heterozygosity) comes with an out-cross. Favorite’s children out of bitches in his own family are potentially the most desirable because they are most likely to carry the same genes as he possesses. There has been no inbreeding on him in any of the first 53 champions. He appears once in the third generation of one bitch put to him—a negligible influence. He should be bred to some of his own daughters, but by and large his sons and daughters are the nucleus from which we must preserve his great contribution. Rich will be the reward for the breeder patient and wise enough to do it.”
[From an historical standpoint, the Spradling article would have been of greater value if it had stated the number of litters sired by Favorite versus the number of litters that produced champions. Also, it would have been worth recording the number of puppies per litter, their sex and color. Unfortunately no one realized Favorite’s potential abilities when a youngster and such statistics are not complete.]
