Other Choices and Think About Them, Too
As I said, when I started with Longhairs, I was so lucky that Dee Hutchinson gave me two excellent, well-bred Dachshunds who basically just needed a couple of fixes to have, in my mind. all that I needed to have the line to be worthy of the top placings in the longhair variety. These two were basically beautifully line bred on the early greats of Bayard, Delldachs and Han-Jo lines and were Lardi (Rose Farm’s Black Berry Buff L ROMO) and her niece (out of Lardi’s sister) Pammy (CH Rose Farm’s Country Girl L ROMX).
Lardi was one I bred first and I chose CH B’s Javelin de Bayard ROMO who had that elusive front that I was still wanting to see how easy it was to get. Java was placed WD, BW and BV from the puppy class at the 71 DCA held in California and was chosen there by Dorothy Pickett who I always considered a master of breeding, showing and judging Dachshunds. He became one of Hannelore’s big winners and was beautifully made, but not quite as on as most of the later Han-Jo dogs. However, his structure was almost perfect and I had, by this time, gone over most of the big winners and there was, to my eye, no other Dachshund that was just half as correct as Jave was. Java was one you could get out and let stand and he had that elusive look that I liked. His head was not his masterpiece, but I had, in the few breedings I had done, determined how easy it was to put a gorgeous head on a beautiful body, but first I needed to get those gorgeous constructions to breed to.
After breeding to Java, it was obvious (to me anyway) that this front was recessive and was easy to lose and hard to get back. There were many big winners in that litter but the best ones from a breeding perspective were CH Rose Farms Zesabel v Boondox L ROMO who was a great producer for me and Wally and Mary Jones as well as CH Rose Farms Delilah v Boondox L ROMO owned by Dee Hutchinson. Both were top producers especially when bred to CH Gerolf das Zwerglein L ROMO and his offspring where the excitement in the offspring came through.
Next, I bred the niece, CH Rose Farms Country Girl L ROMX, to Java as well. She was pretty good in body, but her front was straighter than I liked and set a little further on her body than I preferred. However, I did get what I wanted in the puppies and got CH Rose Farms Hannelore Boondox L ROMX (84 DCA WB and BW) who was the mother of the great CH Rose Farms Chaps L ROMX (multiple DCA BV winner) and CH Rose Farms Honey v Boondox L ROMX owned by myself and John Brading. All of these had the fronts I was wanting and so then I decided how to KEEP these fronts on these dogs and add a little showiness to the picture.
This was back when Hannelore was showing Gerolf as her Special and I was really a fan of this dog as he was so incredibly typy and had the movement that I wanted with a front that you could not fault. He was magnificent in the Show Ring and his rear, while it moved correctly often did not stack so great and looked not as good as you would hope. Anyway, after watching the dog show, I soon realized that some judges were looking for faults and that fault registered and they threw him out before they could even see how he moved. Gerolf also had topline that was not his best feature and these two faults soon made me realize that the Judges I liked could see past these non-existent “faults” and gave the dog the credit for what he had. I soon was one who decided to never look at faults when judging, but instead look for the good things because that is what was being rewarded in the Show Ring. That decision made me change how I was breeding and the ones I kept for showing and it also made me realize what the good Judges were looking for and those were the Judges that I sought out.
At that time, I was not a big breeder but, looking at all my favorite Longhairs and comparing them, I decided that I would use Gerolf to get the type and movement and that elusive showmanship that the longhair needed to get attention in the show ring. I did love that dog and hoped he would do well with the bitches I had to breed from him. I had the structure and was just wanting to get that movement that presented itself and with Java’s correct structure and Gerolf’s type and movement those puppies should be right on track for my line. The first bitch was my Lardi and I wanted to get a litter that had the quality of the Java/Lardi puppies but with a tad more oomph to put in the Ring. To say I got that was amazing and had a B&T female puppy called CH Rose Farms Elite v Boondox who was all that and more. When I showed her, the Judges could not stop looking at her and she loved their attention and appreciated all the great comments I got on her. As I have said, I showed her at the 82 DCA where she won two sets of points and lost them both as she was entered in the wrong class. Everyone thought I would be mad at losing those 10 points, but I just said I was pleased because I got to show her two more times and that made me even happier. She was a great show dog and I hated to sell her to the Martucci’s, but I did when they begged me for a B&T longhair bitch that they saw at DCA. I didn’t think that there would be anything like her left, but there was a red bitch that soon became the top bitch in my Boondox Kennel. As a Show dog, Elite would have been hard to top, but, as a producer, her sister, CH Boondox Emma v Walmar L ROMO showed me where the Gerolf daughters would take me in the dog world and that was where I wanted to wind up. Emma, after we finished Elite, took right off and won several BV’s from the classes and soon finished her Championship. When I bred her to CH Han-Jo’s ‘Xtra Copy L ROMO, I got the perfect litter of all Champions. All were great in conformation and really full of themselves when they were in the Show Ring. This litter consisted of CH Boondox Panama Jack L ROMO, CH Boondox Pumpkin L ROMO, CH Boondox Pandemonium L ROMO and CH Boondox Promise. From these puppies, everything I wanted was here. The type and quality was right there and reaping that quality, again, was what I bred to Gerolf for. By then, you notice that the bitch line from Gerolf was where the quality came from and that is why they were always so valuable. Finding out that the bitch line led to all that quality passing on to the next generation is a very valuable piece of information.
Soon after, I bred Lardi’s daughter, Zesabel, to Gerolf and kept two dogs for a while. Both finished easily, but I sold the B&T one, CH Boondox Walmar Lucifer to Ruth Martucci who loved him and entered him at the 84 DCA where I showed him and he was WD to finish under the Master, John Cook. Lucifer was quite a dog and showed all that he had whenever he was in the Show Ring. When he returned to the Lostdog Kennel. he was bred to Ruth’s other Gerolf daughter, CH Rose Farms Elite v Boondox ROM, and they produced that young sire, CH Lostdog’s Black Bart L ROMX, that I loved as soon as I saw a picture of him. Those two courses of Gerolf made him quite a producer and, when I bred PJ’s dam, CH Boondox Emma v Walmar L ROMO to Black Bart, they produced CH Boondox Yorktown L ROMO who had THREE courses of Gerolf and he produced that star quality in the line and that pedigree meant CH Boondox Yorktown L ROMO did as well. All that quality being on display was my original motive for using that Gerolf on my line. He truly was the star of Hannelore’s Show String and soon became a presence in my Boondox line.
After that, I used CH Gerolf das Zwerglein L ROMO just one more time and got one of my very best litters from him. After I bred CH Rose Farms Country Girl L ROMX to Java, I was extremely happy as I had a couple of Java daughters who had everything I was looking for, but to my mind they were not showy enough and, since Pammy’s aunt had litters by both Java and Gerolf, I decided to use Gerolf on her. What I got to show was pretty amazing and basically the Java and Gerolf puppies were everything I wanted them to be…and more. First, I got the one I sold to John Mohme that Ray McGinnis showed for a few years and who was a Top Producer and then I sold her littermate who we bred to PJ and whose puppies were amazing. Her grandson was the Peat’s Westminster Group Winner a few years down the line. However, the ultimate show girl was CH Rose Farms Orchid v Boondok L ROMO who was the mother of Shoney and Treasure who both were pretty fancy producers. The electricity that they had between them I am sure came down from their grandfather, Gerolf. I am still pinching myself as to how lucky I was to get such quality The great puppies that came down through Java and Gerolf made the Boondox line and I could never be happier with their type and movement and that great showmanship of CH Gerolf das Zwerglein L.
I was not able to use any of Hannelore’s dogs again as she really attacked me after the 84 Pennsylvania DCA and word was sent back that she cut me off from using her Stud Dogs again. Needless to say, after the puppies I had from Java and Gerolf, I was not too happy. However, I had a few friends like Martha Grantham, John Brading and Walt and Mary Jones, that were wanting me to use my new dog, CH Boondox Panama Jack L ROMO. When I saw those puppies and saw how they were all beating PJ from the classes, I soon started using him on all my bitches and just kept improving them along the way. I had all that correctness coming along and it became my job to keep improving my Boondox Line. It was that important to me,
Anyway, when Hannelore Heller made me stop using her dogs, it really opened the way for me to use the ones I had on hand and led to my dog, CH Boondox Panama Jack ROMO, becoming the biggest producer of Champions in the World as well as being the first Dachshund to actually go over the 100 Champion mark. Sometimes, the things you do come back to haunt you.
