A Sunny Day in Mesa at the Desert Valley Dachshund Club (11/03/2013)
I arrived early on Saturday, very tired, so I stayed in my room and slept most of the day, not that I wasn’t interested in what Mrs. Martin was doing, but just needed some rest! I did wake up in the late afternoon and went out to dinner with Show Chairman Phil Benway and a couple of others , had a great time and got back to get to bed early.
I started the judging at 8:30 AM with Junior Showmanship and wound up putting up Colton Bringhurst , a just turned fourteen year old boy , over a few others. He did an excellent job with a youngish longhair, CH Dachall Colton Lucky Penny SL, whom he made look excellent in the ring. He did a great job! There were a couple of other Juniors who I will be looking for later as they all did a very nice job of presenting their Dachshunds.
Longhairs started out first and, since we had twenty seven entered, I hoped we had a some nice ones to be shown to me. Dogs started out with a smallish entry of four and Winners Dog was the Bred By dog of Maggie Peat, Pramada’s Xavier with Jorddachs SL. He was outstanding stacked, had some nice coat and a great attitude, but was a little lacking in forechest and neckset. Reserve Winners Dog was an Open Standard dog, owned by Jan Anholt and Matt Fischer, named Roserun’s Valiant Heart. He was another nice one with a great outline and attitude, but, again, a little lacking in the forechest and neckset area. From the fourteen class bitches, Winners Bitch was a gorgeous red Standard bitch, with great forechest, easy movement, really a top notch one that was a great one to find that day. She was in the Open Standard Bitch class , owned by Haley and Michael Priest, and named Roserun’s Unforgettable. She was excellent standing or moving and was one I would have taken home with me. It is nice to come across one you really like and have her get better with each step. Reserve Winners Bitch was a littermate to the WB, Roserun’s Velvet Touch, owned by the breeder, Jan Anholt, and another one with great look, plenty of forechest, beautiful neckset and with a great front and rear, topped by a solid topline and underline . Both littermates were extremely nice and loved being there!
Adding the WD and WB to the Best of Variety competition of seven Longhaired dogs, two Longhaired bitches and a Veteran dog made quite an impressive site. I worked them all and then reworked them again, narrowing my choices to a few Longhaired ones that seemed happy to be there and showed their joy the whole way around the ring. I made a cut and kept back a few of the best and wanted them to show exactly what they could do. Again, after reworking them, I narrowed the choices down a little and brought CH Dachall Colton Lucky Penny SL, GCH Walmar-Solo’s IOU SL and Roserun’s Unforgettable to gait together and then come to the center and strike a pose. After looking at these choices the handlers made, I gave the red Standard, GCH Walmar-Solo’s IOU SL Best of Variety. I really liked the dog, his forechest was adequate for me here and , definitely, he was the choice of the day. The WB , Roserun’s Unforrgettable, was easily the Best of Winners and Best Opposite for her delight in going around the ring. Unfortunately, she was far too interested in the grooming table when she passed it in the ring and that slowed her down in my choice of BV. My Select Dog was the B&T Standard, CH Dachall Colton Lucky Penny SL who was a close second to the BV winner and had a great front, topline and underline. He was quite a nice dog, but somehow gave out a little while the decisions were made and settled for Select. Select Bitch was Nancy and Carolyn Perrell’s GCH Landd N Conjadanes Celestial Magic, a B&T Standard who had a lot to offer, with a nice outline, and underline with a strong presence in the ring, but, unfortunately was not as strong as the WB in the front department. Award of Merits went to the WD of Miss Peat’s and to Shari Setser and Miki Perry’s GCH Setsers v Sausagestables Prim Piper, another B&T Standard who looked nice in the ring and was a strong contender for Bitch honors, but, again, was just not as strong as the WB in the Front area.
Next was Smooths and we started out with one male who was a great one to be in the ring and could have held his own with much better competition. The Winners Dog was American Bred B&T Miniature and he was Bonnie Gold, Valerio Colon and Patty Guthrie’s Sunrise-XO Empresario MS, shown by Mark Stephenson. He again was a very happy dog to be there, loving the whole world, it appeared to me. All three of my Class bitches were in the Bred By class and Winners Bitch was the Red Standard, Kinderteckel’s Serendipity. She was a nicely made bitch of pleasing outline, with a nice reach and drive around the ring. She was a tad too heavy, but seemed to be happy to be showing and had a great time in the ring. I thought she was correct, front and rear, which put her WB over the other two bitches and made her the best of the Smooth Class Winners in my opinion. Reserve Winners Bitch was a B&T Standard bitch , also from the Bred By class, who again had four honest legs and was one who really enjoyed the attention from the crowd. She, Midernoch Second Act v Marginn SS was shown by her owners, Virginia Stephenson and husband Mark Stephenson.
In Best of Variety competition, two male specials and four bitch Specials joined the WD and WB to present a nice portrait of the Smooth Variety. I thought the competition was pretty strong, but there was one bitch who filled my eye from the start. She was absolutely gorgeous and every part of her made me smile. From the head to the toe and tail, she looked and moved just like all the rest of them should have . She was spectacular, standing and moving. My Best of Variety was the Red Standard , GCH Barkerville Keyera, owned by Ted and Karen Brunner, shown by Ted. She was a very super bitch. My Best of Winners was the WB, Kinderteckel’s Serendipity who kept up her bright performance in the BV competition, but still not as nice as the BV winner. Best of Opposite was the WD, Sunrise XO Empresario MS, who placed over a couple of nice Smooth Specials because he seemed just a little better in front than they did. They were all quite similar in style and look. Select Dog was GCH Ransum’s Grand Hopes for Palladin, a B&T Miniature, owned by Anne and Dale Carnathan, shown by Dale. Select Bitch was GCH Marginn’s Fredrick v Ruf Knabe, a B&T Standard bitch, owned by Sharon Lutosky, shown by Lorene Hogan. Again, she was a strong, sound bitch who had her strength and elegance to offer the crowd and was a real beauty. My Award of Merit winner was CH Kinderteckel’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s , owned by Patti Auld, Lisa Pino and the Williams family, shown by Emi Williams. Another happy one and it made me proud to see just how many nice Smooths there are out now and that is very satisfying to me.
In Wires, my Winners Dog was a Bred by Dog, a Wild Boar Standard, Midernoch’s Major Garrett W, owned by Diana Macpherson, Pat Ridgard and Michelle Bedowitz, shown by Michelle. I loved his stride around the ring and how he made himself look great in the process. Reserve Winners Dog was Starbarrack Sweet Tooth, owned by TL Hossfeld and Janie Nunez, another rangy, ground covering mover. Winners Bitch was Kadell’s Pretty With No Make Up On W, a terrific moving , great fronted puppy from the Bred By Class. She caught my eye immediately when she entered the ring and struck a pose with every movement she made. I found her delightful and one I would have taken home, if given the chance. She was owned by Laura Reynolds and Caitlin and James Cahill and I hope they enjoy her! Reserve Winners was the Open Standard bitch, Del Prado’s Don’t Take Your Love to Town, owned by Pamela Perkins and Michelle Bedowitz. She was another sprightly mover who used what she had and, I hope, made all look at her attributes and understand what made her a worthy addition to today’s winners.
For Best of Variety, the Class dogs were added to the three Male Specials and the four Female Specials. After giving them all a great run, letting them show themselves and showing me what they had to offer, I soon narrowed the entry down to a few of the best. I brought out a Wild Boar Standard Bitch, CH Kadell’s Gold Dust W, a Wild Boar Standard dog, CH Brodny Schoolhouse He’s So Fine, Winners Bitch and Winners Dog and they gaited around the ring and then struck a pose for all to see. They each had great attributes and I wanted to compare them to each other and let them sort out the qualities they have that need passed on to the next generation. Since I am so intent on fronts, I gave Best of Variety to CH Kadell’s Gold Dust W, owned by Laura Reynolds and James and Catlin Cahill, shown by Catlin. She was an outstanding bitch with a great front, wonderful neckset, beautiful rear, topline and underline , topped with a gorgeous head and neck. She most definitely was a credit to the Variety! Best of Winners was Kadell’s Pretty With No Make Up On W , another one owned by the Reynolds and Cahills. I found her to be really nice in front and carried herself with great style, striking poses all day. Best of Opposite Sex was CH Brodny Schoolhouse He’s So Fine, another dog of outstanding type and excellent structure. He is very young and still had a lot of rear to grow into, but his body was all there for the world to see. He, also, was another top dog with so much quality to offer the next generation. Select Dog was a red Miniature, CH Krisaire Del Prado’s Strawberry Fields MW, owned and shown by Ann Bischell who had many nice attributes but not quite as strong in the front department to place much higher today. Select Bitch was a very nice young female, CH Schoolhouse Candy Girl Davis SW, owned by Judy Anderson, Emi Williams and Arlene and Lowell Davis, shown by Lorene Hogan. She herself exuded breed type and was very eye catching, but, again, not as strong in front as the ones placed above her in the line up. Award of Merit was WD, Midernoch Major Garrett W, who certainly as a class dog was in the top few in this line up. Personally, I thought the Wires were great today and was certainly glad they came my way!
Best of Breed brought the Bests of each variety back into the ring and they all had different strengths and weaknesses. In Longs, the BV winner was a nice red dog who had many nice things about him, but he was not as strong in front as the other two entrants. I felt, at this point, the competition was between the Smooth and the Wire bitches for Best of Breed. Again, I regaited them and let them free stack so they showed the world what they had. At that point, while I greatly admired each of the two winners, the Smooth bitch was just outstanding, standing or moving. I loved them both, but gave BB to GCH Barkerville Keyera who literally took my breath away each time she moved and stacked herself so well. She was just an amazing bitch to be shown here.
For Best Opposite, we kept the LH Special in and added the Smooth and the Wire. In regaiting them and letting them stack themselves, it was obvious , to me, that the Standard Wire was the winner of Best Opposite as he had a very nice front with great neckset, topline , underline and rear. Again, he was outstanding, moving or standing still.
For Best Bred By, all the first place winners came back into the ring and I chose the Wire Bitch, Kadell’s Pretty With No Make Up On W, as the one to beat here. She was outstanding and, again, made every pose her own when she stopped. I loved her going around or standing still and she loved to be seen and expected the attention she got from the crowd.
It was an interesting day to judge in Arizona, but it would have been more interesting with a few good fronts in Longhairs. There were nice ones in the winners in Smooths and Wires, but the Long variety was sadly lacking in that department. I loved the temperaments and the attitude, but certainly wished I had better structure in those class entries. Overall, the entry was nice, but not quite as nice as we need in the front department.
